What is Gunter's Chain?
Invented by Edmund Gunter in 1620, Gunter's Chain remains the baseline for historical cadastral surveys (CS, SA, RS, and BS maps) in Bangladesh and India.
A full survey chain consists of 100 metal links.
Fundamental Link Measurement Units
1 Chain = 66 Feet (20.1168 Meters)
1 Chain = 100 Links
1 Link = 0.66 Feet = 7.92 Inches
10 Square Chains = 1 Acre = 43,560 Square Feet
How to Convert Square Links to Shatak (Decimals)
Since $1 \text{ Sq Chain} = 100 \text{ Links} \times 100 \text{ Links} = 10,000 \text{ Sq Links}$:
And 10 Sq Chains = 1 Acre = 100 Shatak:
\mathbf{1,000 Square Links = 1 Shatak (Decimal)}
Example:
If a surveyor measures a plot with dimensions $50 \text{ links} \times 80 \text{ links}$:
Total Square Links = $50 \times 80 = 4,000 \text{ Sq Links}$
In Shatak: $4,000 \div 1,000 = \mathbf{4.0 \text{ Shatak}}$
In Square Feet: $4,000 \times 0.4356 = \mathbf{1,742.4 \text{ Sq Ft}}$
